Twitter is testing redesigned retweets that you can use to respond with a photo or video

Twitter has announced that it tests a feature called “Quote Tweet With Response,” where you can embed a copy of a tweet in a photo or video instead of just replying to it with text.

According to Twitter, the function is currently being tested on iOS. If you have access to the feature, the Retweet menu will include a “Quote Tweet with Response” button. Tapping on it will take you to a screen where you can take a photo or video to place the tweet over or choose one from your camera roll. One of Twitter’s product leads did a response quote tweet to the announcementwhich allows us to see how users are responding.

The feature is similar to TikTok’s video responses, which Instagram recently copied for its Reels feature. Twitter itself has also added new ways to share tweets – in December 2020, the ability to embed a tweet in a Snapchat message or story was added.

Some Twitter users and employees of The edge, have expressed concern that these response quotes tweets could be an easy vector for harassment. While it is relatively easy for the platform to moderate regular quote tweets, it is more difficult to programmatically scan the contents of a photo or video. Some of Twitter’s other features include mitigations like the ability to turn off tagging of photos or restrict who can reply to your Tweets.

However, Twitter spokeswoman Viviana Wiewall said The edge in an email that “currently you cannot turn off who can and who cannot” use the feature for your tweets, as it inherits the default behavior of quotation tweets. When asked if the feature used for harassment was an issue, they replied:

The safety of Twitter users is our priority. While we do not expect this to be used in a harmful way, we will closely monitor the use of the product and make sure that any abuse is assessed according to the Twitter rules.

the Company has also announced that it is testing a new design that allows you to tweet in the main view of the timeline instead of clicking a button that takes you to a screen to compose.
